Why We Strut?

Drawing of Betsy

BETSY'S PROMISE

My name is Betsy and this is my story. Ten years ago, I was abandoned and found wandering the streets of the Midwest. My fur was dirty and matted and I was very hungry. Two caring people traveling through the area found me and brought me to Utah. I went into an adoption rescue program. But I guess I wasn’t exactly the pick of the litter. In fact, I was adopted four separate times and returned for one reason or another. Finally, my foster mom, Cindy Powell, said that was enough and decided to adopt me.

Before Cindy took me home for the very last time, she made her friends Gregory and Julie Castle promise to take me if anything ever happened to her. Gregory and Julie agreed never expecting anything bad to happen to Cindy.

I loved Cindy. She treated me like a queen. Then a very sad day came. Cindy passed away at the young age of 45. No one was prepared, least of all me. Everyone who knew Cindy and her wonderful work for animals was sad but Gregory and Julie made good on their promise – I have been with them ever since.

It wasn’t long after that day that Gregory and Julie made another promise – to help all of Utah’s pets find warm and loving homes. That was in 1994 and the Castles along with several Best Friends Animal Society members decided they needed to work with other people saving animals so they started creating special adoption events and spay/neuter programs. This is when No More Homeless Pets in Utah began.

The mission of No More Homeless Pets in Utah is to end the euthanasia of homeless dogs and cats statewide and promote humane alternatives for feral cats. When No More Homeless Pets in Utah started in 2000, 46,000 animals were euthanized each year in Utah shelters. Now, 8 years later, that number has dropped to 33,000.

No More Homeless Pets in Utah has come a long way but we really need your help to continue and expand our life-saving mission. Every dollar raised makes a huge difference for dogs and cats just like me. If everyone who cared about animals made a promise to work together as a community there will come a day when every dog and cat in Utah would be guaranteed a good home with a loving family. Now I would strut for that!

Thank you for listening to my story and being a part of Strut Your Mutt, No More Homeless Pets in Utah’s largest fundraiser. Your generosity and kindness is saving lives. Together, let’s save them all!

She Was So Very Special and Much Loved!!
http://www.active.com/donate/sym08/mnp045

My first feral kitty – and as a friend said, what a legacy she left behind!! She's the one who is responsible for getting me involved with animal rescue and making me want to try harder to help save the many kitties and other wonderful animals who normally would have not been given a chance. Way to go Little Moma Girl!! I love you dearly and you’ll always have a place in my heart!!

In Memory of Oliver

Photo of Oliver

My family got Oliver when he was just four months old. He was an adventurous puppy, but he soon developed a taste for solidarity, as many shih tzus do. He enjoyed his space, but let us know that he loved us by sleeping on our feet or cuddling up to us on the couch. A few years after he joined our family, I joined the military and was in and out of his life for several years, but I never forgot about him. Every time I was able to come home, Oliver and I picked up right where we left off. As my life in the military began to stabilize, I met a woman who agreed to marry me and, while we were happy in our own right, we felt that something was missing. My wife met Oliver during Sunday dinner at my parents’ house and fell in love with him as he stood on the back of the couch and craned his neck to get a better view of what it was the silly humans weren’t allowing him to eat. My parents’ schedules had recently become busy and they felt that they weren’t able to give him all the attention he deserved and my wife and I volunteered to adopt him on the spot.

We took him home and he immediately established his routine. He was already into his senior years when he came to live with us, but he often surprised us with his puppy-like spryness and curiosity. He was still very playful and wanted to explore everything in his new surroundings. He was an unending source of joy for us and we loved him endlessly for the two years he was with us. He finally succumbed to chronic renal failure last September. We were grief stricken. We had talked aimlessly about getting another dog, but never took any action…until we crossed paths with a beautiful shih tzu puppy in early January. She reminded us so much of Oliver that we picked her up that day and named her Olivia, in honor of our departed friend.

We only found out about Strut your Mutt this year, so we weren’t able to take Oliver before he passed, so this year my beautiful wife will be walking Olivia and our son-to-be in memory of Oliver. Unfortunately, I will be deployed with the Air Force and won’t be able to participate, but I will be there in spirit, rooting the dogs on as they walk their hapless humans around the park.

In Memory of Mulder

He started life as a throw away.  A black Lab that would never bring home blue ribbons or silver cups.  The runt of the litter with a body too small for his head and feet and the biggest sin of all – a spot of white on his chest.  So they put him in a card board box and gave him away at a Safeway store in Logan.  Thus started his journey into our home and hearts.

He came to me when I was having problems of my own.  This cute little guy who no one else wanted.  He slept in my cubicle at work the last couple of hours of my work day after a long drive from Logan and when I got him home he was overjoyed to see my 18 year old German Shepherd.  At last someone to play with!   He romped around her and we couldn’t help but laugh at the way he would roll over as his head would drop and his small little body would keep going.

He was a joy to watch as he grew.  He was still undersized for a lab with a strong chest, a cute face that was almost always smiling and a big heart.  Many hours he sat still as tears fell into his neck and arms held him tight to hold off the injustice of the world.  He would put his paw on a knee and lick away what tears remained as if to say, I’m here.  You’re safe and I love you.

His favorite past times were walking, playing with his best friend Butte next door after we lost Nikki and chewing tin cans.  It didn’t matter if they were full or empty.  A tin can was fair game.  He loved to bark at the statues at the Price mansion as we walked by and he considered the carriage horses his best friends and he made the van rock and roll as he jumped from side barking a gleeful hello.

My valiant boy had his own battles and we watched as he faced health problems.  Tumors were removed.  A bad liver that caused him to have to a special food and finally at nine years of age total blindness.  Through it all he held his head high.  Learned the yard and the house and moved about as he always had.  True now instead of leading the walks whether at Strut Your Mutt or on the street he had to be guided.  However, he still held his head high. We walked the last three years as Mulder’s Guides.

We lost Mulder in February of this year!  This champion who would never be in a champion was called to God.  We know he’s there at the Rainbow Bridge romping with those who have gone before him.  Waiting for us to join him.  So this year we walk at Strut your Mutt as Mulder’s Guides in memory of Mulder and those who went before him – Keefer, Lightning, Tuffy, Nikki and Butte.

In Memory of Sadie

Photo of Sadie

If anyone appreciates Pomeranians, it’s my brother-in-law and sister-in-law Kim and Scott, and my wife and I. Between us, we had five. We have Annie, the court jester, and Chessy, the queen of the castle. Kim and Scott have Sam, a show-quality Pom with a bit of an attitude, and Cody, a sweet little boy who Scott rescued. But it was Sadie, a sweet, gentle black Pom who was their pride and joy.

Sadie knew just how you were feeling and was always there when you needed a canine cuddle. This proved especially helpful since Kim has been battling breast cancer for two years. Through several surgical procedures, countless chemo treatments, and more bad days than she cares to remember, Sadie was there to pull Kim through. Sadie developed diabetes and was given a couple of years, but the little one fought it for three. Sadie recently succumbed to diabetes and now frolics across Rainbow Bridge. Although she was taken from Kim and Scott far too soon, her spirit and fond memories will live on to help Kim through her battle.

Aggie (my beloved Sheltie) and I will be Strutting, not only for all the homeless pets, but for the fallen pets—like Sadie—whose passing left such a void in their humans’ lives. We’ll be easy to spot. My yellow shirt (in tribute to a Yellow Lab named Kirby, my other memorial pooch) will sport Kirby’s and Sadie’s names…along with the autographs of all my special donors. If you see us, feel free to give us a wave. Better yet, help save a shelter pet by donating to No More Homeless Pets via our web page; it’s www.active.com/donate/sym08/teamaggie.

Give your own dog or cat an extra-special hug tonight; they’re not with us long enough.

In Memory of Cassie

Photo of Cassie

I lost my Cassie of 14 years who was my partner in fundraising AND HELPED THE DELTA DOG PACK WIN THE GOLDEN BISCUIT FOUR YEARS IN A ROW.  Attached is a picture of her with the trophy. Cassie loved Strut Your Mutt and sadly lost her battle a month after last year's event.  She will be sorely missed and has been a huge contributer to the event in the past.

In Memory of Ozark

Photo of Ozark Photo of Ozark

Photo of Ozark Photo of Ozark

This year's Strut will be bittersweet for us. We were looking forward to walking with our Coonhound mix, Ozark. But in January, he unexpectedly passed away.

Ozark joined our family in early 2004, adopted from the Toole City Animal Shelter. We were told this was his second time back at the shelter in his three short years. We had seen his picture on PetFinder, and instantly fell in love with those ears! He was such a wonderful friend and member of our family. He was smart and loving but also occasionally followed his hound nose to trouble. He was stinky and snored, but we wouldn't have traded him for anything. He also formed a unique bond with one of our two cats, Toby. They were often found curled up next to each other.

Strut Your Mutt is the largest fundraiser for No More Homeless Pets in Utah, and the money raised goes to help keep animals like our Ozark alive and get them adopted into their forever families. We feel it is just as important as ever for us to be involved with this year's Strut, and for that reason, we will be strutting in memory of Ozark. If you have lost a pet, we urge you to walk with us in memory of the one you loved. Hope to see you there!

In Memory of Bambi

Photo of Bambi Photo of Bambi

Photo of Bambi Photo of Bambi

This will be our third year of raising money and walking in “Strut Your Mutt”, although the reason we began will not be with us this time around. Her name was Bambi and she was our baby. I talked my fiancé in to getting her because I grew up with dogs and couldn’t live without one. He fell in love with her instantly, and despite the fact that she was my birthday present; she bonded with him. She was his. He took her to work with him and trained her to do all sorts of things. She was such a quick learner and so intelligent; with such a zest for life. She was such a funny little dog, and she always kept us on our toes. Iwas always Mommy to her; so when anything was wrong she knew where to go. She snored like a freight train and had a serious problem with overeating. One time I came home and she had pulled the new bag of dog food out into the middle of the floor and ripped it open for a snack. She was a good dog, but she had no boundaries and “come” went out the window when we left the yard.

It was her ultimate downfall, that she saw no reason why she shouldn’t be able to go anywhere. She was an absolute escape artist of the highest order. One morning she got away and actually ran into the neighbors’ house! One Saturday last September we were walking our two dogs out to the back yard, on our way to a wedding, and she decided it was time for a run. She wriggled away from Patrick and he chased after her, but she just ran faster.

Our baby died that morning, and it was one of the hardest things we’ve gone through yet. The only thing that comforts me is the thought that she was just too big for this world, and if she wasn’t safe to go wherever she wanted then the world just wasn’t ready for her. We’ll walk in her memory this year, with her old companion Mr. Peabody and his two little sisters, Wick & Roxie.

In Memory of Kirby

In memory of KirbyAggie will strut this year for Kirby

Ken and Aggie walk in memory of Kirby
My Sheltie, Aggie (pictured) and I will be strutting for Kirby. One of my donors who has donated $100 in the past, just lost her 10-year-old Yellow Lab "Kirby" (pictured). So I told Kirby's mom that Aggie and I would wear a yellow ribbon with "Kirby" on it during this year's strut. She was so moved that she donated an "extra" $100, making her total contribution to No More Homeless Pets $200. Her name is Karen Ridges and she is currently number one on the top donor list. I even changed the color scheme to a yellow-based theme in Kirby's honor. There are many Yellow Labs in Utah, but to Karen, none more special than Kirby.

In Memory of Sasha

Photo of Sasha Photo of Sasha

This year will be my first time attending Strut Your Mutt. And I'm going in memory of the passing of my first dog a German Shepherd named Sasha. After Sasha passed away in early December 2007 I thought that I would never get another dog again. After a few months I found my self looking for another dog and after visiting our local animal shelter I found an 11 month old shepherd that was 15 mins away from euthanasia.

I took her home and named her Kida and she is the best dog anyone could ever ask for and she reminds me so much of Sash it hurts sometimes and the thought of some one not wanting this dog hurt my heart, and the fact that there so many other great dogs out there just waiting for a great forever home. This year I will be strutting my mutt Kida in honor of Sasha my best friend and all the other dogs and cats waiting for a good home.

In Memory of Micki and Bill Britton

Photo of Rascal Photo of Sadee

Photo of Rascal

Meet Rascal, Grizz and Sadee. They were saved to live full lives by Micki and Bill Britton who selflessly ran the Golden Rescue for many years. Rascal had been so badly abused that when his new owners took him home he was afraid to be petted. Initially, he was so frightened of his new environment that he needed to test his new owners resolve by chewing up their lawn furniture, fencing, plants and sprinkler system. However, over time he mellowed into the sweetest most gentile companion anyone could want.

Grizz joined him when he was about 5 and they were inseparable pals until cancer took Grizz at 14. Rascal was so sad at losing his best friend that we soon brought him another young friend Sadee who had been abandoned by her owners. Rascal was her companion until she too succumbed to cancer at the young age of 9. Rascal left us two years ago at the senior age of 15. We are so grateful for the pleasure, affection and comfort  these furry friends have given them over the years.

Bill and Micki’s generous successors who run the Companion Golden Retriever Rescue http://www.slcgoldenrescue.org have entrusted us with our current friends Simon and Koda. We thank all those who volunteer their time, homes, energy and money to assure that these wonderful creatures can live full, healthy and happy lives. They have given us more than we can repay.

Sincerely,
Bob Houk and Judi Gooding
(the lucky bipeds)

In Memory of Topper Harry Houdini

Photo Photo

Photo

My name is Topper Harry Houdini. I was passed from family to family, until I ended up in the Golden Retriever Rescue. On a cold and very snowy November day, a family came looking to take home a Golden, and I was picked. When we got to their little house, the people let me in to the back yard and closed the gate.  Soon I got to go in to the house and I found I had toys and a warm place to sleep by the little boy’s bed. There was also another dog in the family and we became friends. There was a sweet girl too and she took me and my new friend Sarah for long walks and brushed me. But when it came time for a bath, I usually ran. Soon I wanted to explore and the only thing in my way was a six foot fence. Well, I soon figured how to get over it, under it, and through it. So they nicked name me “Houdini” after some guy. Then I started to get sick. My new mom took me to the vet and the pills worked for a while but then they stopped working. My mom was with me until the end. She was there to hold my paw when I passed. She told me a Golden named “Max” would be waiting for me. And someday she and Sarah will come get me and we will be a family once more.

Topper was my beloved baby and I miss him so much.

Who is Buster?

Buster

When Strut your Mutt first began in 1995, a mascot was needed. That's when world-renowned illustrator and painter Don Weller kindly drew a cartoon mascot of one of his own beloved Border Collies. "Buster" became the Strut Your Mutt mascot for almost ten years. Long-time strutters knew whenever they saw the drawing of Buster, that Strut Your Mutt was on the way. The favored cartoon canine was retired for three years but due to popular demand, Buster's Back and that's the theme for this year's 13th annual Strut Your Mutt 2008. Welcome back Buster!

A:
Online registrations are checked frequently and registration packets are mailed as soon as possible thereafter. Please allow up to two weeks for your packets to arrive in the mail. Keep in mind, if you do not receive a packet by the day of the event, you can pick up your materials at the will call line the morning of the event.

Q: Do I have to fundraise in order to come to the event?
A:
Strut Your Mutt is a fundraising event. The more money raised by individuals, the more we can do for animals. Those who do fundraise tend to get more excited about the event, and there are even various prizes for reaching certain pledge levels. Once registered, you gain entry to the event, but any money you do raise goes directly to animals in need.

Q: I am interested in getting a booth at the event. Who do I contact?
A:
Contact the Booth Committee: Maria (801) 597-0987 or Shayna (801) 628-5965.

Q: Do I have to have a dog to come to the event?
A:
Absolutely not! If you have a cat, if you have a dog in your future, or if you just love animals, come and enjoy the morning with us. Funds raised help all animals. (As much as we love cats, this event is designed specifically for dogs. Please leave your feline friends at home.)

Q: What is a "Dog Pack"?
A:
A team of five (5) or more paid registrants. (Details
here)

Q: What are the perks of strutting as a Dog Pack?
A:
Entrance into the Dog Pack hospitality tent, personalized check-in, a photo of you and your team at the event, and the chance to win the coveted Golden Biscuit Award for Corporate teams of 25 or more, or one of our new awards - the Golden Leash Award for Corporate teams of up to 25 people or the Golden Mutt Award for teams made up of family and friends. Plus, when you register for a dog pack, you get $5 off the registration fee!

Q: How do I start a Dog Pack?
A:
1) Recruit friends, family, co-workers, clients, and their dogs, 2) get creative and choose a name for your Dog Pack - include this on your registration form, 3) make sure that every member of your Dog Pack has paid their registration fee, and 4) get ready to strut! (Details here)

Q: Do I register a dog Pack on the same Registration Site?
A:
Yes, all entrants register on the same website. You may enter as a single or a couple and on the second page on lines 21 or 22 you will find the name of your pack or you can enter a new name if this is your first visit. Each member of the pack must register individually, there is no separate pack registration BUT it is important each member of the pack highlights the pack name.

Q: How do I add members to a Dog Pack that is already formed?
A:
Simply have them include the Dog Pack name with their paid registration.

Q: How do we identify ourselves as a Dog Pack?
A:
The possibilities are only limited by your creativity... create a team t-shirt, wear goofy hats, strut on stilts, etc.

Q: Who do people make checks out to for donations?
A:
No More Homeless Pets in Utah (or NMHPU)

Q: If someone gives me a cash donation, what do I do with it?
A:
Donations that are not made online are brought directly to the event.

Q: What is "Buster's Backyard"? Who gets into Buster's Backyard?
A:
Click here for more on the Backyard.

Q: When do I get my fundraising pledge prizes?
A:
Pledge prizes will be awarded when you turn in all collected pledge money the day of the event if you've raised up to $1,000 and mailed to you if you've raised more than $1,000. Should you be unavailable to attend the event at the last minute, prizes will be mailed to you following pledge collection.

Q: I registered early and I'm excited about my free gift but I want two of them because I have two dogs. Can I have two?
A:
Each person registered will receive one free gift, but we will have the same item available for purchase at the event.
