If you ask No More Homeless Pets in Utah staff to describe volunteer Janice Mensink in one word, you will hear the word “superstar” over and over again.

Janice and her husband Pieter started volunteering when they saw Gregory Castle, the founder of No More Homeless Pets in Utah on a local news spotlight back in 1992, long before NMHPU was an official organization. “We were drawn in by the philosophy of the movement and have volunteered in various capacities ever since” says Janice.

Janice is a regular at our events. She’s been responsible for the entertainment at Strut Your Mutt for the last three years, and with each year she’s consistently outdoing herself. In addition to being a member of the Strut Your Mutt committee, she always takes on the role of dog tent captain and cashier at Super Adoption, her favorite event.

Even with all of this she still makes time for what she considers the most meaningful activity - working with the dogs at our kennel every Tuesday. Janice and Pieter do this diligently every week and do a fantastic job taking care of the dogs. “It’s satisfying to know that I can help them to be cared for in a safe place until their forever home is found. Many times I feel that those dogs give me far more than I give them!” Janice explains.

Janice and Pieter are pictured with one of our adoptable dogs, Goose. Most of our dogs are in fosters homes but some of them, like Goose, end up staying at the kennel if they don’t get along well with other dogs. Volunteers like Janice and Pieter are essential in making sure these dogs have a good, nurturing environment during their stay.

Thank you, Janice, for all you do for us and our canine friends!
