| In addition to her weekly duties, she has been a dog tent captain at our Super Adoption events. It’s not an easy task and NMHPU depends on reliable volunteers like Beth to make Super Adoption run smoothly.
Most recently, she helped us set up the day before Strut Your Mutt. Then, on Saturday, she and her husband, Brian, brought their two dogs, Murray, an 8-year old Chocolate Lab, and Pete, a 7-year old Black Lab mix, so the four of them could strut together. She says that their dogs are inseparable. She adds, “My husband and I love them to death!” This is clear to everyone when Beth and Brian are with their dogs.
Beth’s dedication to animals is longstanding, and rooted in her childhood. She explains, “My father was a veterinarian, so growing up I would help him at his office and go on calls with him to farms.” She adds, “My family always had dogs, cats, hamsters or fish when I was growing up.”
She grew up in North Central Ohio and lived in Columbus, Ohio, for 20 years before moving to Utah in the summer of 2007. Despite her busy career as a business litigation attorney for the past 15 years, she remains a consistent volunteer–and has been volunteering for animal organizations for 12 years! Before she came to No More Homeless Pets in Utah as a volunteer, she had been volunteering with her local Humane Society in Ohio for 10 years; only her move to Utah ended her volunteerism there.
Volunteering has brought Beth much joy and satisfaction, and also brought her and Brian a new family member when she was volunteering in Ohio. At the Humane Society, she met Joe, a handsome chocolate lab whose people had taken him to the shelter because they were moving and couldn’t take him with them. “Joe was 10 years old and was clearly upset being at the shelter,” she explains. Deeply touched by Joe’s emotion, Beth gained permission from the director to take the dog home to find him a new family. But that’s not the way things worked out: “When I got Joe to my house and Joe met my husband and our dogs, I knew that Joe wasn’t going anywhere. We adopted Joe…or more appropriately, Joe adopted us.” Joe even made the move from Ohio to Utah, and was a beloved family member for the rest of his life.
We thank Beth for her dedication and for the joy she brings to our dogs (and hers)!
